CAS Hanwei Praying Mantis Katana
Code: PC2359Related products
Product detailed description
The Praying Mantis is a symbol of cunning and power in Japanese culture and is therefore a highly respected motif on samurai swords. Made with a new L6/Bainite carbon steel tool blade in the Shobu Zukuri style with Bo-Hi, this katana features excellent koshirae and is a highly desirable and functional piece. The muted green silk ito and rich brown lacquered saya contrast beautifully with the dark copper and gold accents of the tsuba, fuchi and kashira.
Bainite is a high carbon steel structure that combines great strength with excellent flexibility and shock absorbing properties. It has been known for many years as an exemplary component of the katana blade, but its use has been limited to a few high-end master blacksmiths due to the difficulties associated with the exacting heat-treatment processes required to produce the bainite blade body in combination with the very hard martensite yaikiba (part of the blade) that is essential for katana blades. Hanwei has now mastered this difficult process and uses L-6 tool steel billets (a very tough low-alloy, high-carbon steel) as the starting material. The blades are forged and shaped in the usual way, then carefully heat-treated to achieve the desired bainite and martensite texture before final polishing.
