Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar was a Castilian knight and later a warlord who became especially famous for driving the Arab rulers out of Valencia, his victories earned him enormous respect, which is why he is known mainly as El Cid, or the lord, because he truly was his own master, virtually ruling the territories he conquered during his campaigns. In Spain, the Cid is still the greatest national hero, and he has many admirers in the Arab world for his tolerance of other religions.
