The Finnish brand Wood Jewel was founded in the early 1980s. Owner and CEO Kauko Raatiniemi started creating his products while working at his main job. At first he made large items, such as clocks made from willow wicker. In the early 1990s, Kauko started a full-time business. The first worker came in 1995 and today the company employs around 20 workers throughout the year. The main materials are Finnish curly birch, reindeer horns and coloured plywood.
The brand offers more than 1,000 different custom products, but the main line is knives. In the late 1980s Kauko made its first knives and one enthusiastic collector bought them all. In the early 2000s, Kauko's son Tuomas Raatiniemi started making knives again and built up to producing around 50,000 knives a year.
Finnish Wood Jewel knives are practical products for everyday use. He pays attention to the material of the blade, the shape of the handle and how the knife fits into the sheath. It also produces designer knives and gift knives. All products are from Finland.
