Product detailed description
This summer it will be 90 years since brothers Sigmund and Steinar Helle built their own forge and began making knives on the family farm in Holmedal, Norway. Much has changed since then, but for Helle Sigmund and Steinar, their focus is still the same: Making solid tools that hold and look good. 90 years and two generations later, Helle's design philosophy is still based on the same time-honored principle. Today, the current production manager Jan Steffen (Sigmund's grandson) and the current CEO Svein-Erik (Steinar's grandson) are charged with continuing these principles.
When designing this year's limited edition knife, Jan Steffen and Svein-Erik wanted to honour their grandparents by designing a knife that preserves the essence of their grandparents' design philosophy. They agreed that the starting point should be Helle's pride and joy in the first three decades of production: the Fjellkniven line. This was Helle's "high-end" variant at the time, combining many elements of traditional Norwegian knife culture with a selection of high-end materials and featuring a highly polished blade with a false edge/edge on the spine. Jan Steffen and Svein-Erik also agreed that it was right to reuse the old scabbard pattern developed by their grandparents in the 1930s, which was reintroduced on the Sigmund.
Jan Steffen's design features a 110mm long, highly polished H3LS blade with a slight false edge on the spine. The 107 mm long handle features pleated red leather inlays and a combination of curly birch. The scabbard, made with the original 1930s Helle-style print, is done in black with red stitching in honor of the forge that Jan Steffen's grandfather was in charge of.

No machine can replace skilled craftsmanship.
Helle knives are made to withstand the pressures and stresses that knives are subjected to during use. Helle maintains its tradition of handcrafted craftsmanship, not subject to automated production and an unnecessarily wide range of models. They believe that the highest quality is achieved through honest hand craftsmanship.
Experienced professionals are proud of the Helle production system. As each piece leaves production, it is checked for up to half an hour, for the sake of certainty that all quality and workmanship requirements of the knife are met.
A Helle knife goes through up to 45 stages of manual operations before finally being inspected and packaged.
