Everyone really knows the Buck name, the Buck closing knife has become a household name. The story of the Buck knife began in 1889 with the birth of Hoyt (Heath) Buck. After four years of schooling, he had to start working and became an apprentice blacksmith at the age of 13. Not infrequently he also had to sharpen hoes. The peasants came to him very often, so he began to think about how the hoes could be kept sharp for longer. After much experimentation, he discovered a simple method of hardening that became the basis of Buck's current hardening system. In 1907, he met his future wife. Their first son, Alfred Charles Buck, was very enterprising. He changed many jobs, and in 1946 he and his father started a knife manufacturing business. In the basement of his church, his father set up a small blacksmith shop where he began making Buck knives for the military. By the end of the war, he had a long list of soldiers who wanted to order a knife from him. The Buck family made knives exclusively from old saw blades that contained large amounts of carbon. Al, his wife and their oldest son kept the business going after his father's death, producing 25 handmade knives a week. Through his pastor, Al met Howard Craig, who was in quality control at Ryan Aeronautics. From their collaboration, Buck Inc. was born. And so began the history of Buck Knives Inc. The steel is first heated to 1066 oC and then rapidly cooled to -84 oC. In the third stage, the blade is again slowly heated to 177-510 oC. The second innovation is the 2X blade. This involves a special grinding of the blade. Previously, the blade was ground on both sides at an angle of 35-50 oC. This new technology was developed by a team of engineers and experienced grinders. The result is a durable blade that can be easily re-sharpened.
