Until the early 20th century, people in Italy commonly carried pocket knives. However, due to their frequent "abuse", laws were passed requiring all such knives to be cut at the tip of the blade to reduce their danger as a weapon. Some people then decided that they could get the most effectiveness from the sharp edge of the traditionally flat blade shape, and began carrying straight knives.
The straight edge was thus considered a feared weapon of self-defense for a time.
Such "abuse" of the conventional straight-edge inspired the design of the Extrema Ratio T-razor.
